VMware Horizon is a modern platform for secure delivery of virtual desktops and apps across the hybrid cloud. To offer a great end-user experience, VMware Horizon provides media optimization for Teams. This optimization improves overall productivity across virtual desktops and apps, and enhances user experience when calling and meeting using Teams.

The required media optimization components are part of the Horizon Agent and Horizon Client by default and there's no need to install any additional plug-in to use the optimization feature for Teams.

Deciding on which approach to use depends on whether you use a persistent or non-persistent setup and the associated functionality needs of your organization. For a dedicated persistent setup, both per-machine and per-user installation will work. However, for a non-persistent setup, Teams requires a per-machine installation in order to work efficiently. See the Non-persistent setup section.

With per-machine installation, automatic updates are disabled. This means that to update the Teams app, you must uninstall the current version to update to a newer version. With per-user installation, automatic updates are enabled. Keep the Teams desktop app in your VDI environment up to date. Teams desktop app versions with release dates that are more than 90 days older than the current version's release date aren't supported. Unsupported Teams desktop app versions show a blocking page to users and request that they update their app.

For most VDI deployments, we recommend you deploy Teams using per-machine installation. To update to the latest Teams version, start with the uninstall procedure followed by latest Teams version deployment.

For Teams AV optimization in VDI environments to work properly, the thin-client device must have access to the internet. If internet access isn't available at the thin-client device, optimization startup won't be successful. This means that the user is in a non-optimized media state.

In a dedicated persistent setup, users' local operating system changes are retained after users log off. For persistent setup, Teams supports both per-user and per-machine installation. In a non-persistent setup, users' local operating system changes are not retained after users log off. Such setups are commonly shared multi-user sessions. VM configuration varies based on the number of users and available physical server resources.

For a non-persistent setup, the Teams desktop app must be installed per-machine to the golden image. This ensures an efficient launch of the Teams app during a user session. Using Teams in a non-persistent setup also requires a profile-caching manager for efficient Teams runtime data synchronization. Efficient data synchronization ensures that the appropriate user-specific information such as a user's data, profile, or settings is cached during the user's session.

Make sure data in these two folders are synced:. A roaming folder or, if you are using folder redirection, a caching manager is required to ensure that the Teams app has the runtime data and files required to run the application. This is necessary to mitigate network latency issues or network glitches, which would otherwise cause application errors and a slow experience due to unavailable data and files.

But not all devices updating to Version or later have received Teams as part of the update process because the rollout has been a gradual process over several months. So if you've updated a device to the latest version of Microsoft Apps, but Teams hasn't been installed, that is probably expected and not necessarily an error.

It's likely a future update will install Teams. If you're updating your existing installation of Microsoft Apps to Version Build To complete the installation of Teams after the update, either restart the device or have the user log off and log back on. The date when Teams can start being added to existing installations of Microsoft Apps depends on which update channel you're using. If you don't want Teams to be added to existing installations of Microsoft Apps when you update to a newer version, you can use Group Policy or the Office Deployment Tool.

Or, as an alternative, you can let Teams be added, but use Group Policy to prevent Teams from automatically starting when the user signs in to the device. The following is a configuration.

Also, in some situations, doing an Online Repair results in Teams being installed. For example, if Microsoft Apps is configured to get updates from the Office Content Delivery Network CDN and the update channel or version you're using includes Teams as part of the installation. If your organization isn't ready to deploy Teams and you use Group Policy, you can enable the Don't install Microsoft Teams with new installations or updates of Office policy setting.

If you've already installed Teams but you want to use this policy setting to prevent Teams from starting automatically, enable this policy setting and then run this script on a per-user basis to reset the autostart setting for Teams. But even if you enable this policy setting so that Teams doesn't start automatically, an icon for Microsoft Teams will appear on the user's desktop.

If devices in your organization are shared by multiple users, be aware that Teams is installed separately for each user that signs into that device. Installations of Teams average about mb, so hard disk space, as well network bandwidth for updates, might become an issue for these shared devices installed with Teams. In cases where shared devices are used by a significant number of users, you might want to consider not installing Teams on those shared devices.

After Teams is installed, it's automatically updated approximately every two weeks with new features and quality updates. This let users who were not interested in Teams not have it launch and reduced the infrastructure resource requirements of every user having a Teams session.

However, as Covid precautions stuck around and adoption drastically increased, it no longer made sense to allow per-user installs to persist and provide inconsistency in the environment. The migration from per-user to per-machine is automatic.

Microsoft will convert the install when a per-user logs into a per-machine image. We noticed that the Taskbar shortcut must be unpinned and repined as it still pointed to per-user install. Also, the Teams Outlook add-in pointed to the old per-user install and had to be fixed with a registry key update.

And finally, on rare occasions, the migration did not work successfully; In the session as an admin, Teams had to be uninstalled and then reinstalled.
